Sacred Reflections

Size: 53" x 53" // Medium: Acrylics on Canvas

“Contemplation is a clear mirror.”

Sacred geometry is a salient feature in Fatimi Architecture. The patterns used in the Fatimi masjids of Cairo, such as Kufic calligraphic inscriptions, ornate medallions and lacy, stucco grills are characteristics of the Fatimi architectural heritage. These designs are used to enhance the physicality of the edifices.

However, since architecture has symbolic value, it is not physically alone. It has the ability to transform these spaces into places for prayer and contemplation, rooting us into deeper awareness of who we are (roots) and where we want to go (wings).

A Prophetic saying states that an hour’s worth of contemplation is more rewarding than a year’s worth of worship! Therefore, contemplative clarity and objectivity is shown by the clear light streaming in from the window grill-golden mirror.

If your mirror is clouded by desires like self-promotion, envy and greed, shown as the shadows casted below, then your truth will surely be distorted.

My ‘Sacred Reflections’ have lead me to realize that I am a reflection of eternal light and my roots are not of this Earth!

‘Sacred Reflections’ is a painting inspired by a geometrically patterned Fatimi grill that is replicated in Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah’s Nairobi campus.
